Sharks Swim Team

Sharks Swim Team 2020

**IMPORTANT UPDATE PLEASE READ**

YWCA/Coaching Staff are working on different scenarios/options for a Fall/Winter season.  These options will be based on local and state guidance, as things progress. If you are interested in joining us this Fall/Winter, please email us at sharkscoaches@gmail.com and we will place you in our email update contact list.

The Sharks Swim Team is for children ages 6-18 with strong swimming skills.  Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes.

We have an excellent group of coaches who are excited about taking your child’s skills to the next level.

Try-Outs

Swimmer must be able to swim 25 meters (full length of the pool) front crawl/free style and backstroke, without stopping. If the swimmer knows how to swim breastroke, butterfly, perform dives and turns off the wall, the coaches would like to see those skills as well. None of these skills have to be perfect, but the swimmer must show forward motion. If the swimmer does not know how to dive, swim breastroke, butterfly, or do a flip turn at the wall, they can still make the team. The coaches will ultimately determine if the swimmer can join the team. New swimmer try-outs are free of charge and done by appointment only. To schedule an appointment please email, Coach Megan, at sharkscoaches@gmail.com Try-out will take approximately 20 minutes

Two Week Trial (Optional)

After your child passes the try-out, your child has the option to find out what swim practice is like before committing to the team for the season. Your child will practice with the team during their regular practice time. There is a small fee for this option. After the two week trial period ends, you can either choose to not continue, or you can sign your child up for the entirety of the season.

Fee: $25

Levels of Swimming Description

Sharks Level 1

Ages 6 – 8, and any new swimmer between the ages of 9 – 11. Participants with some or no competitive swim experience. This level focuses on stroke training and techniques, and basic endurance. Recommended 2+ times/week.

Sharks Level 2

Ages 9 – 12, and any new swimmer between the ages of 13 – 15. Focus is 50% on stroke technique, and 50% endurance training. Recommended 2-3+ times/week.

Sharks Level 3

Ages 13 – 18. Focus is on advanced techniques and endurance. Recommended 3+ times/week.

Sharks Level 4

Ages 13 – 18, for swimmers who wish to compete at a very high level. Focus is speed, endurance and technique. Recommended 4+ times/week.

USA Swimmers

This is for swimmers who love competition at the pre-Olympic level.  Swimmers must be recommended by their coach to be part of this group or have already been in this group before the fall.  These swimmers will still practice during their scheduled level, but will have an extra 2 weeks of practice before the regular team starts and 2 weeks of practice after the regular team has stopped practicing.  This group will also attend USA meets and league meets, around 12 meets a year.  There is an extra $75 USA membership fee (that is not for the YWCA) to be paid directly to USA Swimming.  The coaches will talk to the families about this.

High School Sharks

This is for members of area high schools who are not part of our USA program, who wish to get a jump on their high school season and build their skills and learn more about the swimming atmosphere.  Swimmers will practice with the Sharks pre-high school season and may double periodically to enhance their skill and endurance. High school swimmers must be willing to compete with Sharks at dual meets as their high school swim schedule permits.

Level 1: Monday-Thursday 5:45-6:30PM
Level 2: Monday-Thursday 6:30-7:45PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM
Level 3: Monday-Thursday 6:30-8PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM
Level 4/USA: Monday-Thursday 6-8PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM

Swim Meet Schedule

TBD

Fall sports conflict ??-  Please do not forget to register your child for winter swimming even if they can’t begin practice until after a fall sport is over (such as football, hockey, soccer, etc.)   Just email the coaches at sharkscoaches@gmail.com with a projected date for your swimmer to start practice. The meets do not typically start until late November or early December, so there is not a real conflict with fall sports.

Aquatics

Since 1981, the YWCA Gettysburg and Adams County has been home to the only public indoor swimming pool in the county. Within our aquatics program we offer a variety of programs for all ages: from our American Red Cross-certified parent-child program that teaches children as young as 6 months old age-appropriate respect for water, to our senior water fitness classes that are populated by men and women on the other end of the age spectrum.

Children and teenagers can participate in swim lessons that will take them from elementary water safety skills to be able to swim at least six different strokes. More advanced children and adults can join our Sharks swim team or our masters swimming program. We have recently expanded our swim team program for youth to compete on a national level and even train for the Olympics. Our water fitness classes offer our more senior members an opportunity to strengthen their muscles and lose weight in a no-impact environment.

We offer community organizations discounts for the use of our pool, and members can rent the pool for private parties.

Get kids ready for the beach, lake or pool!

American Red Cross Swim Lessons

Help your child learn to swim at an early age. Participants learn about water safety and basic skills to get them swimming independently.  Your child has the opportunity to advance through three swim levels developed for their age group by the American Red Cross.

Children will learn water safety and swimming skills. These classes prepare kids to have independent fun in the water while giving parents peace of mind. Not only do these classes help prepare kids for upcoming water activities such as family trips to the beach, but also leave them with life-long swimming skills.

Participants must bring their own towel, and bathing suit. We also encourage everyone to wear water shoes, or sandals to prevent slipping in the locker rooms or on the pool deck.

Parent-Child Lessons

Give your infant or toddler a head start on life by helping them become comfortable in the water. Once they have adjusted to being in a pool, they are ready to learn swimming skills and can get started at an early age.  This class helps prevent children from being afraid of the water as they age and it teaches them how to be safe around water.

This class will familiarize children ages 6 months to 3 years with the water and prepare them to learn to swim on their own. It is not designed to teach babies survival skills or how to swim without a parent. It is designed to equip the parent with skills to teach their babies/toddlers to swim on their own. Cost of parent-child lessons is per child.  All children must wear a swim diaper.  There must be an adult with the child in the water.  There are no added fees for the supervising adult.
