Registration for Fall/Winter Sharks Swim Team Begins in October

The Sharks Swim Team is for children ages 6-18 with strong swimming skills.  Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes.

We have an excellent group of coaches who are excited about taking your child’s skills to the next level.

Tryouts for the Sharks Swim Team:
First time swimmers interested in our swim team must try out with a swim team coach.  Try out appointments are made via email: sharkscoaches@gmail.com.  The swimmer will show the coach what they can do.  Assessing a swimmer’s skill takes about 20 minutes. Swimmers must be able to swim the entire length of our pool (25m) doing each of the following strokes: freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.  They also must show they can swim at least half the length of our pool (about 15m) doing the butterfly.  They must show their skills in diving, flip turns and open turns.  The swimmers do not have to be proficient in these skills.  The coaches will determine whether a swimmer is ready for the Sharks Swim Team or whether the swimmer would benefit from practicing with the Mini Sharks, a pre-competitive team.  After the try out, the swimmer will pay $25 to practice with the team for 2 weeks to determine if this is the sport for them.

Description of Swim Levels:
Level 1:  Participants with little to no competition swim experience.  This level focuses on competitive strokes and techniques.
Level 2: Focus is 50% stroke technique and 50% endurance training.
Level 3: Focus is on advanced techniques
Level 4: Swimmers who want longer and tougher workouts

USA Swimmers: This is for swimmers who love competition at the pre-Olympic level.  Swimmers must be recommended by their coach to be part of this group or have already been in this group before the fall.  These swimmers will still practice during their scheduled level, but will have an extra 2 weeks of practice before the regular team starts and 2 weeks of practice after the regular team has stopped practicing.  This group will also attend USA meets and league meets, around 12 meets a year.  There is an extra $75 USA membership fee (that is not for the YWCA) to be paid directly to USA Swimming.  The coaches will talk to the families about this.
High School Sharks: This is for members of area high schools who are not part of our USA program, who wish to get a jump on their high school season and build their skills and learn more about the swimming atmosphere.  Swimmers will practice with the Sharks pre-high school season and may double periodically to enhance their skill and endurance. High school swimmers must be willing to compete with Sharks at dual meets as their high school swim schedule permits.

Level 1: Monday-Thursday 5:45-6:30PM
Level 2: Monday-Thursday 6:30-7:45PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM
Level 3: Monday-Thursday 6:30-8PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM
Level 4/USA: Monday-Thursday 6-8PM; Friday 5:30-6:30PM

Swim Meet Schedule: TBD

Fall sports conflict ??-  Please do not forget to register your child for winter swimming even if they can’t begin practice until after a fall sport is over (such as football, hockey, soccer, etc.)   Just email the coaches at sharkscoaches@gmail.com with a projected date for your swimmer to start practice. The meets do not typically start until late November or early December, so there is not a real conflict with fall sports.
