THE GETTYSBURG ELDERHOSTEL
A "SUPERSITE" SPONSORED BY THE YWCA OF GETTYSBURG & ADAMS COUNTY
"In
great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change
and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for
the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations
that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by
whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless
field, to ponder and dream; and lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall
wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls."
General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
Gettysburg, October 3, 1889
You are the reverent men and women who will come from all parts of this country
to see where and by whom great things were done for you, to hear the words
of the people who were caught-up in the greatest battle in American History,
to walk these hallowed grounds.
Experience a 5 night - 6 day program, arriving in our quaint town for
registration on Sunday afternoon and departing after
lunch on Friday. Enthusiastic instructors will make your
stay in Gettysburg a memorable one, from classroom lectures to exciting field
trips and not only entertaining but educational activities! Be sure
to check-out the curriculum offered. There, you will find courses on
the Three Days In July 1863: The Battle of Gettysburg; Abraham Lincoln; The
Eisenhowers; Espionage; Intelligence; Commanders and The Southern Perspective,
just to name a few. Depending on the program week you select and what
courses are offered, you may experience a walking tour of the town, a visit
to the Eisenhower National Historic Site, the National Cemetery, and "on-the-field" programs with the Gettysburg National Military Park Rangers.
Each week, you will visit the Visitors Center for an overview of the Battle. As you learn about each day during the
Battle of Gettysburg, in a chronological presentation, you will visit
the site of that day's battle.
We look forward to meeting you and wish you the very best of experiences here!
