Unity Walk

Thanks to all who joined us for our 4th annual Unity Walk on Oct. 7 as Deb McCauslin and Curt Musselman, members of Historic Gettysburg Adams County, led tours of McAllister’s Mill, which was recognized this year as part of the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The mill was one of the first stops on the Underground Railroad north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the building housed hundreds of slaves seeking freedom between 1850 and 1855. A special thanks to Mulligan McDuffer Adventure Golf for providng parking for our participants!

The YWCA’s Unity Walks take participants through a historically and culturally significant part of Gettysburg. In 2008, our inaugural event led walkers through Gettysburg’s Third Ward, a historically black neighborhood and home to a growing Hispanic/Latino population. In 2009, walkers explored the town’s northeast quadrant, hearing from living historians portraying Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith, and learning about President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s effect on the American Civil Rights movement.

At left, Deb McCauslin shares the story of McAllister’s Mill with participants during our fourth annual Unity Walk in October 2011.

Stay tuned for more information about next year’s Unity Walk, scheduled for October 12, 2012.
