Cultural Celebration Events

The YWCA’s Cultural Celebration Events offer a venue to appreciate the diversity in our community. Since 2008, we’ve hosted events featuring the cultures of India, China, Mexico, Ireland, and Italy, and explored how traditions in those cultures are observed here in Adams County. We have also hosted a multicultural holiday celebration, including traditions of Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Diwali, Eid al Adha, and Yule.

Our second Holiday Stories from Around the World celebration was held Dec. 9 at HACC Gettysburg! THanks to all of our presenters for sharing the stories of Christmas, ‘Id al-Adha, Hanukkah, Yule, and Chinese New Year.

If you have ideas for future cultural celebrations, please e-mail Ashley Andyshak Hayes or call 717-334-9171, ext. 113. Find out how you can support our cultural celebration events.

Wednesday and Friday Morning 6:15 – 7:15 cycle class with Tammie Brush-Campbell
Join us for a high intensity morning ride. This one hour stationary bike class combines cardiovascular speed work and intense hill climbing for an overall great workout. A focus on muscle confusion with limited recovery time promotes muscle endurance and growth. This class is a fantastic cross-training workout for serious runners and fitness enthusiasts looking to break through a plateau. Proper fitness attire and shoes are required. (Some bikes allow for clip-in bike shoes.) It is advised that you bring at least one full water bottle to class.

Thursday morning 9:30 and Saturday morning 8:45 – 9:30 cycle class with Emily Bucher
My class is all about the tunes! Anything goes, from hip-hop to pop to rap, and even country. I coordinate the “ride” to the beat of the music, and no two classes are ever the same. Sprints and standing runs are two of my favorites, building on cardiovascular endurance and stamina. Each participant is encouraged to go at his or her own pace, but the strong beats and pounding bass will motivate you to give it your all, each and every time. Come join me for a sweat fest every Thursday and Saturday morning…or at least come to hear some good music!

Monday morning 9:30 – 10:15am and Saturday 9:45 – 10:30 am cycle class with Jen King
Hi! My cycle class usually lasts between 50-60 minutes. Hills are my favorite! In a typical class we climb at least 2 hills that are about 15 minutes each also included in my class are seated sprints and jumps. I like to add surprises from time-to-time just to keep you guessing. My music covers today, the 90’s, 80’s, and some oldies but goodies. Stop in and try a class! I look forward to seeing you!

Tuesday night 6:00 – 6:45 pm cycle class with Christina Berry
A fun and instructive class focusing on a combination of endurance and strength training. Taught by a certified Spin instructor this class focuses on proper form and ends with five to ten minutes of stretching.

Monday evening 6-6:45 pm cycle class with Lisa Wolkind
Monday evening spin is designed to combine our love of music, fitness and friendship into one sweaty hour. Class begins with approximately 8 minutes of warm up followed by speed intervals, high tension hill climbs and jumps. We end class with a short cool down and relaxing stretches as our reward for pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones. Everyone, is welcome regardless of fitness level. Your work out is your own and you will reap the rewards of YOUR individual efforts.

Monday morning 6-7am cycle class with Jeff Cann
Start your workweek with Punk*Cycle — 6AM on Mondays. An hour of raucous music spanning 5 decades provides motivation through this challenging morning ride. Alternating climbs, sprints, flats and runs promote increased cardio-vascular endurance and muscle stamina. Continual focus on cadence ensures that riders are actively working throughout the session. Substitute drills are suggested for novice riders, but all should come prepared to sweat.
