Nearly New Sale

The great thing about YWCA fund-raisers is they benefit our supporters as much as they benefit the organization. The YWCA then takes the benefits it reaps and filters them back into our community. It is an endless cycle that results in a stronger Adams County.

Our biannual Children’s Nearly New sale give you the opportunity to buy and sell good-quality, gently used, seasonal children’s clothing (infant – size 14), shoes (bagged in pairs), maternity clothes, baby equipment, furnishings, toys and MORE!

Make money on your gently used children’s items and save yourself the trouble of selling them yourself!  For a 45 percent commission, plus a small handling fee, the YWCA Nearly New Sale draws great crowds of shoppers, sells your items for you, and the proceeds benefit the entire community through YWCA programs and services!

Like all YWCA fund-raisers, the Nearly New Sale relys heavily on volunteers. Those who volunteer at least five hours have the opportunity to shop the pre-sale Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

encore breast cancer awareness 5K

There is a very good chance that you know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, if it has not been yourself.

When someone is suffering from an ailment we have not experienced, we often say to ourselves “I wish there was something I could do.” Likewise, the person suffering may feel no one understands what they are going through.

The Encore Breast Cancer Support Group brings together women who are dealing, or have dealt, with breast cancer and offers a variety of programming reflecting the needs of the members.

The Encore Breast Cancer Awareness 5K, scheduled for Oct. 9, 2010 at 8:30 a.m., brings together an entire community who support this great group of women and their cause in helping others with breast cancer diagnosis.

The race starts at the YWCA and runners will witness the beautiful fall foliage as they travel through Cumberland Township. Medals are presented to first and second place men and women in the following age groups: 18 and under, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70 and older.

This fall event will travel through the beautiful Cumberland Township countryside. For those of you who do not live in Adams County, the fall is a beautiful time to visit Gettysburg and tour the Gettysburg National Military Park. The National Apple Harvest Festival – a great event for the entire family – is also occurring that weekend and is only a short drive from the YWCA. More information on that festival can be found at http://www.appleharvest.com/

Those who register by Sept. 25 will receive a free long-sleeve t-shirt.

For more information, contact Deb Geesey Yocum at 717-334-9171, ext. 124.

Race Against Racism

One of the dirtiest words has a few more than four letters.

Racism is something almost everyone experiences at some point in their life, and that is unacceptable.

The YWCA tagline – eliminating racism and empowering women – emphasizes our desire to teach everyone about the need for equality. Equality is more than tolerance. We should not just “tolerate” those who are different than us, we must learn to appreciate their differences and acknowledge how a diverse society makes a better society.

Our racial justice programs are free to the public, but the YWCA does incur some costs. To help offset these costs, and hopefully grow our educational opportunities, the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County joins other YWs in Pennsylvania in hosting a Race Against Racism.

Proceeds from this 5-mile race, traditionally held the last Saturday in April, benefit all of these programs. As you run through the beautiful Cumberland Township countryside, you can think how you are helping all of those who have experienced these terrible injustices.

First and second place awards are presented to men and women in the following age categories: Under 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and older.

For more information on the Race Against Racism, contact Alex J. Hayes at ahayes@ywcagettysburg.org or 717-334-9171, ext. 116.

A date for the 2011 race will be announced soon and applications will be available in the fall of 2010.
