How to become an American Red Cross lifeguard:
Pass the lifeguard try outs:
A. Swim 300 meters (non stop front crawl/freestyle or breaststroke
B. Tread water without your hands for 2 minutes
C. Dive for a 10 pound brick, swim 15 meters on your back with it, and get out of the pool in under 1 minute and 40 seconds.
If you pass the try out, then you can enter the Lifeguarding course. This does not guarantee that you will pass the course.
- Read the lifeguard manual.
- Attend all class days and turn in your homework
- Pass the written exams and rescue scenarios on the last day of class

American Red Cross Lifeguards are certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. All of these certifications are good for two years.
