How to become an American Red Cross lifeguard:
Pass the lifeguard try outs:
A. Swim 300 meters (non stop front crawl/freestyle or breaststroke
B. Tread water without your hands for 2 minutes
C. Dive for a 10lb. brick, swim 15 meters on your back with it, and get out of the pool in under 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Read the lifeguard manual.
- Attend all class days and turn in your homework
- Pass the written exams and rescue scenarios on the last day of class

Fee: $99 to the YWCA; plus $35 to the American Red Cross
American Red Cross Lifeguards are certified in First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administration of an Epi Pen, Asthma Inhaler, and Emergency Oxygen. All of these certifications are good for two years.
