Community outreach

The YWCA is the perfect place to learn, play, and improve emotional and physical well-being.

Giving Back to Our Communities

The YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Our community outreach initiatives help us further our organization’s mission.

The YWCA has over 220 associations across the country, comprising one of the top 25 largest charities in the U.S. It is part of a movement serving over 2 million nationwide and 25 million worldwide. To advance YWCA’s mission, local YWCAs throughout the country offer services and programs in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls. Each association does this in a way that is unique to its community’s needs.

At the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County, our vision is to be positioned as the center for personal and community growth—the place to learn, play, and improve emotional and physical well-being. The YWCA guides Adams County to positive change by connecting cultures, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and empowering all who walk through our doors.

Racial Equity Training

At YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County, our social justice work is not limited to our core program. Mission Enhancement Director Nancy Lilley is prepared to work with your organization to find personalized solutions. Your company might use a variety of terms—diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural competence—to describe the skills or capacity they are trying to build. Whatever the terminology, your local YWCA is here to help.

Our customized training could include consulting on your organization’s work policies and HR practices, facilitating a difficult discussion with your leadership team, or designing and delivering custom workshops and training events that assist your company or organization in their pursuit of specific social justice or inclusion goals. Whatever your issues or needs, we would like to assist you. To begin that conversation, contact Nancy at 717-334-9171, ext. 115 or gro.grubsyttegacwy@yelliln.

Nancy has completed three Racial Justice Training programs, culminating in her completion of training in July 2019 by Cultural Bridges to Justice and YWCA Lancaster.

Our Racial Justice Work

Racial justice and equity has always been at the core of the YWCA mission. By providing the community with resources, information, and programs to highlight the importance of racial justice work, we can continue to move our society forward in addressing the many inequalities that are still present today.

Everyone living or working in the Borough of Gettysburg is protected by a nondiscrimination ordinance passed in 2020. The Borough’s Human Relations Commission provides information and education to residents, businesses, employees, and institutions concerning their rights and duties under the ordinance.

The YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County is a member of the Adams County Human Relations Council.

The Adams County Human Relations Council strives to create a supportive climate in Adams County in which citizens view each other with respect and act to uphold an equitable society, based on freedom, dignity, and justice for all; and to improve human relationships in this community, fostering full and equal opportunity for all, without reference to race, ethnic origin, religious identification, economic status, gender, age, or physical condition.

The Council’s goals are:

  • to increase among community residents an awareness, appreciation, and acceptance of the diversity of human beings among us;
  • to develop a community spirit and a cooperation that will allow people to live, be included, and be productive in this county in an atmosphere of positive acceptance, free of the mistrust and apprehension caused by bigotry and prejudice;
  • to foster equality of opportunity for all persons by assisting individuals and/or groups who need help to resolve human relations problems;
  • to advocate for public policies and practices that provide freedom, dignity, and justice for all.
