Giving to the YWCA
Our membership and program fees cover only 87 percent of our operating expenses, and we rely on private donations and grants to cover the rest. You can help support YWCA programs by donating directly, contributing items on our wish list, or volunteering your time.
What part of the YWCA touches your heart? Read board member Jane Lordeman’s story in our Fall Friends Letter.
We chose to retire in Gettysburg for many reasons: its seminal historic significance, proximity to our children and grandchildren, a college town with many cultural offerings and the memories of meeting here forty years ago as undergraduate college students. Healthy lifestyle options, like the town’s walkability, its healthcare system and the YWCA were also major considerations.
After more than three decades in a career with the YWCA’s counterpart, the YMCA, we have seen many not-for-profit community centers all across the country. Gettysburg is a most fortunate town to have the caliber Y it does. The facilities are exceptionally well maintained and amply equipped, and the staff members are courteous, friendly and helpful. We joined initially for the fitness center and wellness classes, and to meet and make friends in our new community.
We also believe in the greater work and purpose of the YWCA, and support it with a charitable contribution. A central tenet of the Y’s mission, that it serves all regardless of financial condition, makes the availability of Y services and programs a great equalizer in our community. We revel in the wonderful melting pot the Y is, where folks of all ages, religions, races and incomes are welcomed into an extended family of people striving to improve their lives. The Y’s work is not merely transactional, but transformational.
A great rhetorical question to ask is “What if we awoke one morning and there was no YWCA in Gettysburg?” Thousands of us would be without critically needed health, childcare, recreation and other vitally important services. Our community would be diminished and poorer in spirit. We purchased a membership for our own personal wellness and relationship needs, but we donate to the YWCA for the broader role it plays in making our region a better place to live – for everyone. We believe the Gettysburg YWCA is extremely worthy of generous charitable support; we hope you will too.
