American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course will train and certify participants to be a national Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED Instructor for the Professional Rescuer. We teach a blended learning course format with online education, classroom and in-water components. This is a 24  hour course that includes 4 practice teaching sessions, in which the students each teach a portion of the lifeguard course.

You must pass the pre-course skills to get into the course.
This can be done by appointment.

  • Be at least 17  years old.
  • Have a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Successfully complete the online introduction to the course.
  • Obtain all instructor and participant manuals and DVD.
  • Pass all pre-course skills test: do all in water rescues and extrications, and demonstrate CPR/AED skills.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

This is a blended learning course. Participants must try out to enter the course. Once they pass the tryout, then they can do the 7 hours of course work online and 24 hours of practical skills on land and in the water. This course provides certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogen Training, Administration of Emergency Oxygen, Epi-Pen, Asthma Inhaler and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer for 2 years.

Try Outs

Everyone must try out to determine whether or not they can take the class.

The tryout consists of:

  • A nonstop 300-meter swim (front crawl / freestyle / or breast stroke)
  • Tread water without your hands for 2 minutes
  • Dive for a 10 pound brick, swim 15 meters on your back with it, and get out of the pool in under 1 minute and 40 seconds

If you pass the tryout, then you can enter the Lifeguarding course.

Steps to Successfully Passing the Course

  1. Read the lifeguard manual.
  2. Finish all online course work.
  3. Attend all class days.
  4. Pass the written exams and rescue scenarios on the last day of class.

Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Course

Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Course

This is an Adult & Pediatric First Aid and Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED blended learning course taught through the American Red Cross.  This course is designed for anyone over the age of 16, who would like to be certified.  This certification is good for 2 years.

Class Details

This is a blended learning course.  You will be expected to spend about 2-3 hours online.  The online portion of this course is expected to be completed prior to the skills day scheduled at the YWCA.

Students are to register for this course by paying the YWCA fee for the skills/teaching portion of this course.  Everyone must pay prior to the class date. Once this fee is paid, the student must contact the Aquatics Director, Cora Rhoads, via email to have the online course link emailed to them.

Swim Instructor Course (WSI)

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course

Get paid to share share your skills and knowledge.  The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course can help young teenagers get a job and prepare them for a career in the education field.  The certification is a life-long certification for as long as you keep teaching.  You will definitely get back your money’s worth and more.

The course is for anyone age 16 or older.

This course is a certification course that will allow you to teach everyone, infants to adults, how to swim.  You will also be able to teach water safety courses and safety training for swim coaches.

Please bring a towel, goggles, swim suit, and a change of dry clothes.

Participants must be at least 16 years of age and pass a pre-requisite swim test. This course certifies swimmers to be swim instructors for all ages and capabilities. This can be a lifelong certification.

WSI Try Out Swim Date

June 1 at 8:15am or by appointment before June 1.

The pre-course swim test is the following:

Front crawl- 25 meters
Back crawl- 25 meters
Breaststroke- 25 meters
Elementary backstroke- 25 meters
Sidestroke- 25 meters
Butterfly – 15 meters (half the pool length; it does not have to be perfect, but you do need to move forward motion in the water)
Back float – in deep end for 1 minute (sculling allowed)
Tread water for 1 minute
