Lifeguard Course

How to become an American Red Cross lifeguard:
Pass the lifeguard try outs:
A. Swim 300 meters (non stop front crawl/freestyle or breaststroke
B. Tread water without your hands for 2 minutes
C. Dive for a  10 pound brick, swim 15 meters on your back with it, and get out of the pool in under 1 minute and 40 seconds.

If you pass the try out, then you can enter the Lifeguarding course.¬ This does not guarantee that you will pass the course.
Try out Date: March 1, 2019  at 3:00PM or by appointment prior to March 1.

  1. Read the lifeguard manual.
  2. Attend all class days and turn in your homework
  3. Participant must be at least 15 years old by the last class day
  4. Pass the written exams and rescue scenarios on the last day of class

All Class dates must be attended:
March 4  3:00PM-9:15PM
March 5  3:00PM-9:15PM
March 6  3:00PM-9:15PM
March 7  3:00PM-9:15PM

American Red Cross Lifeguards are certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administration of Emergency Oxygen, Epi Pen and Asthma Inhaler.  All of these certifications are good for two years.  Lifeguards will also be certified in Bloodborne Pathogens which is good for one year.

Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Course

img_1062This is a Basic First Aid and Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED blended learning course taught through the American Red Cross.  This course is designed for anyone over the age of 16, who would like to be certified.  This certification is good for two years.

This is a blended learning course.  You will be expected to spend about 2-3 hours online.  The online portion of this course is expected to be completed prior to the skills day scheduled at the YWCA.


Students are to register for this course by paying the YWCA fee for the skills/teaching portion of this course.  Everyone must pay prior to the class date. Once this fee is paid, the student must contact the Aquatics Director, Cora Rhoads, via email to have the online course link emailed to them.
